Andreas Gugumuck revived a long Viennese tradition in 2014 by founding his vineyard snail farm. Well-fattened Roman snails were a delicacy in old Vienna and were eaten by all social classes. In the 18th century, Vienna was considered a snail stronghold. Behind St. Peter's Church in the first district there was a snail market where the snail women sold them, as the "oysters of Vienna".
